“Mai més penjaré els talons”, by Mireia Campos Canudas

What it is about

Miquel has been married to Eva for thirty years. He is a father, a respected teacher and, behind closed doors, he keeps a refuge of silk and heels under lock and key: Lola. The story is set in motion when Miquel's mother, who has Alzheimer's, lets slip childhood memories that rearrange the pieces of the family, and he ends up confessing that he is a crossdresser.

From there the novel opens out in two directions. On one side, his son Pol's rejection and Eva's difficult acceptance; on the other, the relief of no longer having to hide and of finding other people like her in a crossdressers' association in Barcelona. A traumatic episode bends the path and leaves Miquel and Lola facing a decision with no way back.

Why we are featuring it

Few novels tell crossdressing from the inside and without judging, and fewer still are written in Catalan. This one does, and it portrays something we know well at EnFemme: the weight of a double life, the fear of being found out, and what changes when you finally let yourself be seen.
